The Oklahoma Sooners‘ offense certainly wasn’t as good as it needed to be in 2025. It was good enough to help Oklahoma win 10 games, but they were largely inconsistent. The Sooners need to improve on offense if they want to get back to the College Football Playoff again in 2026.
With the transfer portal opening on January 2, Oklahoma will have an opportunity to improve the offense and that’s CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford’s New Year’s Resolution for the Sooners.
Brent Venables has made it clear he wants quarterback John Mateer to return in 2026 despite inconsistent play this fall for the Sooners. If he does, Oklahoma will have its signal caller and system in place for the second straight year, which puts the onus on weapons in the backfield and on the outside. – Crawford, CBS Sports
The Oklahoma Sooners will be active in the transfer portal to provide Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer more options in the passing game. Even if Oklahoma is able to retain Isaiah Sategna, the Sooners need to find a player who can come in and start right away on the outside. Someone with size that can complement Sategna in the slot.

Javonnie Gibson will be back, and Oklahoma has talented outside receivers with potential in Zion Kearney, Ivan Carreon, Elijah Thomas, Emmanuel Choice, Jayden Petit, and Daniel Odom on the roster, but there’s not a lot of production to bank on. The Sooners have to find a way to develop their younger talent so they can get them on the field but they don’t have the luxury of going into 2026 with question marks on the outside.
That’s why you’ll see them in the mix for arguably the top player to be available in the transfer portal, wide receiver Cam Coleman. It’ll cost them to bring in Coleman as well as retain Sategna, but if the Sooners can pull that off, it’ll give them a huge boost on offense for 2026.
Running back is certainly an area of concern as Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock battled through injuries in 2025. They were productive at times, but the Sooners’ running game struggled for the most part. The offensive line needs to improve, and so does the scheme, but Oklahoma could use some experience to lead the running back room this offseason and into 2026, with Jovantae Barnes and Jaydn Ott out the door.
It remains to be seen how much of a priority Oklahoma will make acquiring skill position players but you can bet that they’ll be active when the transfer portal opens on Friday.
