The college football season is up and running. Games are entertaining and are producing results that are both fun and heartbreaking. Take a look at this week’s MWCConnection Football Rankings, and let us know what you like and what you don’t. Feel free to drop your own rankings in the comments section.
The Aggies ran into a better team this weekend in Vanderbilt. The offense is legit and shows it can play with anyone. However, the same cannot be said for their defense. However, they played a ranked team and put up 35 points. There is no shame in that. But it’s not great to give up 55 points no matter who you play.
The Broncos had great moments and some moments for concern in their blowout win against App State. The offense is explosive and has shown they can score points in a variety of ways. The defense still had some tackling issues but the pass defense showed some big improvements in both yards allowed and forcing interceptions. Hopefully, it’s a sign of things to come because they are going to need it with Notre Dame next weekend.
The Lobos keep doing what they have all season. They come out, look well prepared, execute some big plays, play hard, and more often than not, win games. It’s great to see New Mexico do so well and getting a rivalry win is always a good feather in a new coach’s cap.
The Rainbow Warriors got back on track this week with a conference win. Winning in a shootout plays right into this team’s hands, as their offense can put up a lot of points when they are rolling. Hopefully, this means Micah Alejado is healthy and ready to go. But if Hawaii finds itself in more of these type of games, things should bode well for them.
Winning games should count for something and that’s what the Aztecs did this weekend, getting past NIU. But winning a game 6-3 usually doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence for how things will play out going forward. San Diego State still has a lot to figure out on offense. However, two wins in a row in two completely different ways and sitting at 3-1 on the season isn’t nothing, so perhaps the team is learning how to win even if it’s not a consistent formula.
The Falcons look like they have figured things out at quarterback, and therefore, figured things out offensively. Having a QB who can run the triple option and throw the deep ball consistently makes this an extremely dynamic offense. On the other side of things, the defense is poor and keeps every opponent in games. The secondary is young and going through growing pains, but more growth needs to occur.
The Spartans were mere seconds away from their second straight win, but couldn’t hold things together. Beating Stanford should have happened, but things stalled for them defensively in the fourth quarter. It’s been a disappointing season for San Jose State this year, but fortunately for them, the teams below them in the rankings are preventing them from being at the bottom of the conference.
The Rams may or may not be the worst team in the Mountain West, but they have been so disappointing that they need to spend at least a week at the bottom spot. The switch at quarterback failed to produce any meaningful results, as the team could only muster a lone field goal during 60 mins of play. Colorado State has mounting issues and too many questions with no clear answer through the first month of the season and tensions are sure to be running high for everyone involved. Thankfully, there is still over half a season to figure things out, but it must be figured out.
