Hot Mustard’s latest retro soul single combines a boom bap beat with 60s jazz
For their latest single, “Hall of Giants,” jazz duo, Hot Mustard, draw influence from some funky soul music coming out of the late 60s or early 70s. It’s underpinned by a bit of boom bap hip-hop percussion and layered with a tasty horn section. The result is some fantastic retro soul jazz.
The track features a horn section arranged by TV on the Radio trombonist, Dave “Smoota” Smith and Antibalas trumpeter, Jordan McLean. Via Mardot makes her debut on the track with an expressive theremin while the track is rounded out by Ross Bogan and his funky organ chops to add an extra layer of spice and flair to the groove.
The video for “Hall of Giants” was meticulously crafted by Hot Mustard’s Jack Powell and features a collage made from archived footage from the 1940s and 50s including educational materials, propaganda, old home videos, and vintage ephemera.
“The music video is the culmination of a style I’ve been developing for many years,” explains Hot Mustard’s Jack Powell. “Assembling film defects, fragmenting animations, and isolating pieces of vintage footage to create shapes and visuals that I find interesting. My goal is to depart completely from the original context of the source materials and transform them into something entirely new.”
