Lions head coach Dan Campbell joined 97.1 the Ticket on Tuesday to discuss how he feels heading into Detroit’s Week 11 matchup in Philly.
Campbell noted they are embracing this weekend, treating it like any other game week: the Lions are going into Philly with a game plan. He intends to continue managing some of the play calling, maintaining that collaborative effort with John Morton and the other coaches that helped lead them to the win against the Minnesota Vikings last week. Though there will be changes, some things Campbell and the staff are aware they need to work on to perfect this new style of gameplay. He feels it’s most effective to stay 2-3 plays ahead and adjust as needed.
Will that plan work against a solid team like the Philadelphia Eagles? Well, Campbell took notes while Philly took on the Green Bay Packers last week and feels like they have their hands full heading into Sunday.
On offense, Campbell is feeling pretty good. With play calling in his hands, and him and Jared Goff seeing the game in a similar fashion, it should be fairly easy to move the chains and adjust when something doesn’t quite go their way. He refers to their relationship as “tight”, giving the utmost confidence in Goff’s ability to get the job done. As for the defense, they have their work cut out of them. Detroit is fully expecting the ever-controversial Tush Push to make at least one appearance and the guys are as ready as they can be. While it’s difficult to practice for the play at full speed, Campbell has confidence in his guys to defend with technique. DJ Reader, Roy Lopez, and Alim McNeil understand how to play with leverage, which they’ll use to their advantage should the Eagles decide to send Jalen Hurts out with their specialized quarterback sneak. But according to Campbell, the Tush Push is the least of Detroit’s worries and there’s plenty they’ll have to defend before they make it to that play.
The guys are going into this game with the mindset that they are heading into a heavyweight matchup. “One misstep can cost you the game,” as Campbell warns. “Every play matters.” So while the Eagles are running high off their last minute win against the Packers, Detroit is preparing to head into this game with poise, focus, and what they’re best known for: grit.
