The Chargers got off to a fast start to their season last week with a 27-21 win over the Chiefs in Brazil.
LA’s offense was characterized by its ability to get receiving weapons in space last week, using misdirection and play action to free up grass for the likes of Quentin Johnston and Tyler Conklin. It was a particularly effective strategy for Johnston, who led the Chargers with 79 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns thanks to a usage pattern that more closely aligns with his strengths as a player. While the Raiders don’t have the same caliber of corners as Kansas City, offensive coordinator Greg Roman will need to prove last week’s game plan wasn’t a one-time stroke of genius.
Outsmart the Vets
The Raiders got strong games from two veteran castoffs in Week 1, as linebacker Devin White and safety/linebacker Jamal Adams both looked like some of Las Vegas’ best defensive players, especially in run defense. Both of those players are known to struggle in coverage, however, so getting them into conflict early and often to mitigate their impact will be crucial for the Chargers.
Contain Maxx Crosby
Crosby will likely spend most of the evening lined up against right tackle Trey Pipkins III to work his matchups and avoid ascending left tackle Joe Alt on the other side. Crosby has been Pipkins’ most frequent matchup in his career, with the Charger allowing 11 pressures in 105 pass-rushing matchups, per Pro Football Focus. If Pipkins can hold up on the right side and allow some of LA’s longer-developing play action concepts to read out, the Chargers should be able to keep the chains moving on offense.
Gain Ground Traction
Los Angeles didn’t get the explosive performance they were probably hoping for from first-round pick Omarion Hampton in Week 1, as the rookie took 15 carries for only 48 yards against the Chiefs. The Chargers still generated 90 yards on the ground, thanks in large part to the legs of Justin Herbert. They’ll need to find some production – whether it’s Hampton, Herbert, or Najee Harris – on the ground to keep the offense balanced on Monday.
