Boyan Angelov injects some serious funk and soul into the Jazz Underground
This month we are pleased to invite Bulgarian producer, Boyan Angelov, to take over the mix. He’s based in the country’s capital, Sofia, and he produces under the moniker Boyan — which after doing a bit of research is a Slavic name that means “warrior” or “fighter.” And while Angelov the man might be a warrior, his music is distinctly the opposite. It’s soulful, funky and takes a lot of inspiration from the future bass movement.
Angelov has been on our radar for a few years now — popping up on a mixtape or two, or when he releases a new album — but today I’m happy to report that he will be taking over the playlist this month with 10 new tracks for the Jazz Underground. Angelov takes the mood of the Underground into a place that is more steeped in funk and soul than the playlist has very been before. His selection features new singles from producers that are pushing the genre like Nic Hanson, Dam Swindle, Haile Supreme, Ryan James Carr, and Marc Rebillet. If you prefer your jazz with funk, Boyan has got your lineup.
If this is your first time listening to the Jazz Underground, here’s what you need to know: The Jazz Underground is a monthly feature where we enlist the musicians and producers who are pushing the boundaries of what jazz means to them. The idea is to change the perception of the music’s rotten public image — a genre that can sometimes be stuck in the past rather than something that is always evolving. Each month we invite a new resident artist to contribute and curate the playlist to reflect what jazz sounds like today.
Have a listen to the playlist, and if you like what you hear, make sure to follow the Jazz Underground playlist on Spotify.
